The devastating reality is that millions of children across the world grow up without the protection, love, care and support of their parents. All too often, orphans are left to fend for themselves in this cold and cruel world, whilst grieving, struggling, and in desperate need of support. They have nowhere to turn, which means orphans are among one of the most vulnerable groups of people in the world today.

According to UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund), there are roughly 153 million orphans worldwide. Every day, an estimated 5,700 more children become orphans. Children are often abandoned due to war, natural disaster, poverty, disease, stigma, and medical needs.

An orphan is defined as a child under the age of 18 who has lost his or her parents, while a vulnerable child is also under 18 and is in a risky situation where he or she may suffer significant physical, emotional or mental harm.

Many of these children already come from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds, so losing one or both parents can mean that access to education, the safety and protection of shelter, the sustenance of nutritious meals, and the chance for a secure future all become an impossible dream. That’s why the responsibility of care for the orphan falls upon our shoulders.
